Professor at Humbdolt University in Berlin. He is associate professor at the Institute Europeen d'Administration des Affaires (INSEAD) in Fontainebleau and a fellow at the Wissenschafts-zentrum in Berlin. In 1996 he was visiting professor at the University of California in Berkeley. He is a member of the Council of the European Economic Association and the American Economic Association. His main areas of research concern economic integration, development, globalisation and transformation in the transition from the socialist to the western system. He has published: Mediating the transition: labour markets in Central and Eastern Europe (with T. Boeri and J. Kollo), London, Centre for Economic Policy Research, 1998. In Italy he has published Macroeconomia: un testo europeo, with C. Wyplosz, Egea (2006).
