Right in the heart of the historic centre, between Via Torre Vanga and Via Pozzo, with its entrance on Via Roma, the municipal library of Trento is situated in a former Jesuit college, to which an attractive liberty-style room was added in 1990 (Sala Manzoni). ?The founding of the municipal library of Trento, officially opened to the public on 1st January 1856 – a period in which Trento and Trentino were part of the Tyrol, with the region’s main town being Innsbruck - dates back to the last will of Bishop Giovanni Benedetto Gentilotti, who donated ten thousand volumes from his sizeable collection. This had been gathered together during the course of many years of activities as an academic, librarian and collector in Salzburg, Vienna and Rome. The municipal library of Trento was thus established as an institution dedicated to the memory and documentation of culture (Italian) in the area. The collections of old and recent volumes are joined by whole archives or individual documents (also including the historic municipal archives since 1876) and artistic objects “illustrating the ecclesiastical, civil and literary history of the diocese and the principality of Trento and of the ecumenical council celebrated in this city". Meetings take place in Sala Manzoni (90 seats).
